Intensive Rehabilitation Program at PYONG Rehabilitation
The Intensive Rehabilitation Program
The intensive rehabilitation programme at PYONG Rehabilitation Penthouse is designed to emphasise rehabilitation that is continuous and intensive over an initial period of 1 month, every step being under the close care of rehabilitation physicians and a multidisciplinary team. We use the latest modern technology in rehabilitation medicine, in order to hasten recovery, reinforce capacity, and preserve the quality of life of patients with diseases of the nervous system and the brain.
Who is this programme suited to?
This programme is suited to patients who have a state concerning the nervous system and the brain, or who have problems in movement and in living daily life, for example
- Cerebrovascular disease (Stroke)
Suited to those who have symptoms of weakness on one side, difficulty walking, difficulty swallowing, or problems of speech, after a state of the brain lacking blood or of bleeding in the brain. The intensive programme will help restore movement, increase capacity, and prevent complications. - Parkinson's Disease
Suited to those who have symptoms of slower movement, trembling, difficulty walking, or frequent falls. The programme will help train walking, balance, and the use of the hands, and promote the patient being able to do the routines of daily life by themselves more. - Alzheimer's & Dementia
For those who are beginning to have problems of memory, of thinking, or of reduced capacity in living. This programme will emphasise restoring both the body and the brain, together with occupational therapy and training life skills in order to slow the decline. - Those who have received injury to the brain or the spinal cord
Such as patients with accidents to the brain or the spinal cord, or after spinal surgery, who have symptoms of weakness or the loss of some movement. This programme will hasten the restoration of their potential and adjustment so that they return to living life as close to normally as possible. - Older people who want rehabilitation after being in hospital or who have become weak rapidly
Suited to the group whose body has declined from not being used for a long time, or who have complications, such as degenerated joints, wasted muscles, or fear of falling.
Note: If you are not sure whether the programme is suitable or not, you may consult the team of rehabilitation physicians for a preliminary assessment before beginning the programme.
The strong points of the intensive rehabilitation programme at PYONG Rehabilitation Penthouse
- Every plan of rehabilitation is designed specifically for the individual by a rehabilitation physician
- Close care by a multidisciplinary team, such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, clinical psychologists, and dietitians
- The use of a wide variety of rehabilitation medicine technologies and new innovations (see the details in the next section)
- Assessment of the result and continuous adjustment of the plan of rehabilitation monthly, holding to academic evidence (Evidence-Based), measurable indicators, and adjustment according to each individual's symptoms
Planning the goals together
We join with the patient and the family in determining goals of rehabilitation that are clear and possible, in order to create motivation and follow up the outcome in reality, for example
- Coming back to walking by oneself, or walking further
- Helping oneself in the routines of daily life, such as bathing, dressing, and eating, better
- Increasing the strength and the endurance of the muscles, reducing the risk of falling
- Restoring the skills of speech, of communication, or of memory
- Returning to work, or to activities one once loved
Close care by the rehabilitation medicine team
Our programme is cared for by a team of rehabilitation physicians as the main thing, with a multidisciplinary rehabilitation medicine team ready to care for every aspect, namely
- Rehabilitation physicians
- Specialist physicians of other fields (according to what is suitable for each case)
- Physiotherapists
- Occupational therapists
- Speech therapists
- Clinical psychologists
- Dietitians
Every step of the treatment has coordination and joint meetings regularly, so that the plan of rehabilitation truly answers the problems and the goals of each patient.
Combining technology and new innovations in the field of rehabilitation medicine
We choose to use modern technology that meets the standards and has passed research at the international level, for example
- Overground Wearable Exoskeleton (the walking-assistance robot): used for training walking and restoring the capacity for movement of the legs. Suited to patients with cerebrovascular disease, paresis, paralysis, or diseases of the nervous system who have the problem of being unable to walk or of difficulty walking.
- Hand Rehabilitation Robot (the hand-rehabilitation robot): used to train the movement of the hand and the fingers. Suited to patients whose hand is weak after cerebrovascular disease or brain injury, or whose hand cannot move because of paresis.
- Isokinetic Exercise Robot (the isokinetic muscle exercise machine): used to restore and build up the strength of particular muscles safely. Suited to those who need to build muscle after surgery, who have wasted muscles, or who have a degenerated knee joint.
- Cognitive Rehabilitation VR (the system for restoring the brain through virtual reality): used to train the brain and the memory. Suited to patients with dementia or Alzheimer's, or older people who want to stimulate thinking and the use of the brain.
- Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS: stimulating the brain with electromagnetism): used to treat and restore the working of the brain, such as a state of depression, paresis after a stroke, or restoring the brain after injury.
- Peripheral Magnetic Stimulation (PMS: stimulating the peripheral nerves): used to stimulate the peripheral nerves and muscles, such as the arms and legs, helping restore symptoms of weakness, numbness, and wasted muscles from diseases of the nervous system or from a compressed nerve.
Every technology and instrument is chosen for use by rehabilitation physicians, so that it is suitable and matches the goals of each patient.
Summarising the result, and continuous assessment of the treatment
We follow up and summarise the result of the rehabilitation systematically, with assessment and reporting of the result continuously and regularly every month, so that the patient and the family know it in detail, in order to follow up the progress and adjust the plan so that it suits the real situation of each individual.
- The programme of rehabilitation begins at a period of 1 month
- The period can be extended to 3 months, 6 months, or 12 months, according to what is suitable and to the goals of recovery of each patient
- In every period of the rehabilitation there is continuous adjustment of the plan by the team of doctors and the rehabilitation team, in order to be confident that the patient will receive the greatest benefit and have the greatest chance of recovering
- The progress of the result is reported to the patient and the family regularly, so that everyone takes part in deciding and planning together
An example of a rehabilitation programme for stroke patients
- An initial period of 4 weeks (extendable to 3, 6, or 12 months)
- Intensive rehabilitation training 4 hours a day, 3–5 days a week
- Determining goals specific to the individual (such as walking by oneself, swallowing food better, communicating better)
- Consisting of physiotherapy, occupational therapy, restoring speech, and the use of specific technology, such as Exoskeleton, Hand Robot, TMS, PMS
- Assessment of progress by the team of doctors every week and a detailed summary of the result every month
- If the patient has clear development, the programme can be extended to 3, 6, or 12 months in order to increase the potential of recovery to the greatest degree
Note: every programme is designed to suit the symptoms and the potential of each individual by a rehabilitation physician.
The length of time in the rehabilitation
In general the training on each day will take 1-4 hours, depending on the programme of training and the goals of the patient. The personnel taking part in each session may differ according to the kind of the training; for example, on one day there may be rehabilitation physicians, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists taking part in the care, according to the character of the activity and the goals of the patient.
The cost of the rehabilitation
The cost depends on the goals, the length of time in training, and the level of technology used in each programme. In general, the cost of rehabilitation per hour is 3,000‑6,000 baht, depending on the kind of rehabilitation (physiotherapy/occupational therapy/technology). That said, there are also packages for long-term programmes of 1, 3, 6, or 12 months, and you may ask for advice on planning and budget with the team of doctors and staff.
